Track owner Bill Mullis announced a multi-year agreement with the Larry King Law Firm

Personal Injury attorney Larry King has made lots of money suing people who race on area highways and injure his clients. He’ll be giving some of that money back to Langley Speedway, to help professionals race stock cars legally.

On Tuesday, track owner Bill Mullis announced a multi-year agreement that the Larry King Law Firm has become the official entitlement sponsor for Langley Speedway. Effective immediately, the facility, featuring a 4/10-of-a-mile asphalt racing oval, will be named Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway.

Neither King nor track officials would divulge the dollar amount of the agreement. But track sales and marketing manager Chuck Hall said it gives a significant boost to Mullis’ business plan for the track.

Mullis, who operated the track for seven years before its closure for the 2016 season, purchased it for about $2 million in February. Langley has been on a roll ever since, reopening on April 1 with what is believed to be the biggest crowd in track history — an estimated 8,000 — followed by attendance at the following two races much larger than usual for early in the season.

According to a track press release, the facility is now the first NASCAR-sanctioned track in Virginia with a corporate sponsorship. Only a handful of NASCAR tracks have benefited from such an arrangement, the best known of which was Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C.

“This is truly a great day for Larry King’s Law’s Langley Speedway and its competitors and fans,” Mullis said in the release. “In these trying economic times it’s gratifying to find a corporate partner who loves racing as much as we do and is willing to support what he loves.”

King has been a supporter of the track for more than a half-decade, sponsoring the Modified Division considered the second most prestigious of the track’s 11 divisions. He talked about his motivation for doing more at the track.

We do lots of things in the community,” he said. “We help students and sponsor things at the college (Christopher Newport University), we help sponsor the arts through The Encore Society at the Ferguson Center for the Arts, we support and help people and organizations at many levels."

“I enjoy the (track). I see the good people that come out there. It’s a good way to help the community prosper and gain some notoriety also.”

King labeled the 67-year-old track, which has hosted nine drivers who combined to win 36 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup titles, “iconic.” He added he’s been proud to be associated with the “professional staff” there.

“Langley is one of the hallmark sports venues in Virginia, so everyone in our firm is thrilled to be named as title sponsor of this historic track,” he said. “Bill did a masterful job of acquiring the track in the offseason, then he and Chuck Hall and their staff — and all of the volunteers who helped — did a terrific job of getting it race-ready in just a few weeks.

“This speaks well of their team, and we’re proud of joining such an exceptional group of men and women.”

King, an attorney for more than 40 years and named by multiple organizations as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Virginia, is also is a big racing fan.

“I engage in martial arts (as an instructor), I support racing, I engage inmany educational and community activities,” King said. “If you have a life you have to live it and interact with people and help as much as you can.

“There is great action (at Langley). I have competition in my blood and enjoy seeing those fiery competitors out there who want it so bad.”
