Chronic
pain is persistent pain, usually present for six months or
longer, and is the most common pain patients suffer from.
Chronic pain is usually due to a non life-threatening
condition that has not responded to treatments prescribed by their
physician. Disorders
that may result in the development of chronic pain include arthritis,
fibromyalgia, headaches, low back pain, whiplash injuries or TMJ
dysfunction.
Accident victims who suffer from
chronic pain may also suffer from a variety of other problems,
related to their chronic pain. A person who are unable to cope with
chronic pain may become depressed, withdrawn, and develop feelings of
hopelessness and helplessness. Chronic pain sufferers may not be able
to cope with the constant pain and inability to find adequate relief.
Their inability to cope with this pain often leads to
interference with their daily activities, their social and familial
roles. Often they become
frustrated, sleep deprived and angry.
Treatment for patients with chronic
pain needs to be multidisciplinary, involving the patient,
physicians, nurses, therapists and physical therapy.
A multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain allows the
patient to receive appropriate physical therapy, medications, and
psychosocial treatment.
