Personal Injury Type -  Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a very common but often misunderstood or under-recognized disorder. The term fibromyalgia translates to mean pain of the soft tissues (tendons and ligaments included) and muscles. Fibromyalgia does not affect the actual joints. Therefore, although a person may complain of aching and pain around the joints, the joints are not at risk for deterioration as they are in arthritis. The diagnosis of fibromyalgia is often confused or delayed due to the vague symptoms and symptoms that are similar to other diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and chronic fatigue syndrome.

The main symptom of fibromyalgia is pain. There have been 18 specific areas of tenderness identified with fibromyalgia. These areas are specific tender points in the neck, chest, pain, hips and knees. People with fibromyalgia must exhibit tenderness in at least 11 of the 18 identified areas. This pain is often described as burning, aching, shape, stiffness or soreness. Most often, a persons complain of an increased amount of pain with awakening or pain at night, affecting their sleep. Peoples with fibromyalgia may also exhibit a variety of other symptoms to include tension and migraine headaches, numbness and tingling in their arms and legs, fatigue, sleep disturbances and stomach complaints (diarrhea, constipation).

There are no lab or xray testing that can be completed to verify the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. As mentioned above, a persons must exhibit pressure tenderness in 11 of the 18 designated points for diagnosis.
