Jaw
injuries are one the most common facial injuries due to the
prominence of the jaw. Some of the causes for injuries to the jaw
include motor vehicle
accidents,
assaults, and falls onto the chin. Motor vehicle accidents are the
most common cause of trauma and injury to the jaw. Assault
and
crime
victims
frequently suffer jaw injuries. The jaw is also prone to sustaining
multiple fractures as the force of one blow or direct hit is
transmitted to another area.
Patients
with injuries to the jaw will most likely complain of pain and
tenderness to the affected area. Patients may also relate difficulty
with opening their mouth. On physical examination, patients with
fractures to the jaw may exhibit some facial asymmetry, bleeding
around the mouth, numbness of the lower lip and swelling. Close
observation of often required in patients with jaw fractures as they
may develop significant swelling which could interfere with their
ability to breath effectively, swallow or communicate.
Treatment
of jaw fractures includes clearing the mouth of secretions and blood
to ensure adequate breathing. Patients may require pain medication
and antibiotics. A soft diet or drinking through a straw may be
needed to assist with limiting the movement of the jaw.
If the fracture is displaced, surgical repair may be required.
