Personal Injury Type -  Teeth

Injuries to teeth can be as a result of a variety of traumatic incidents.  Falls, motor vehicle accidents, physical assaults, and recreational activities can all lead to trauma and damage to teeth.  A fairly new injury type to teeth is found in persons with tongue piercings.  Inadvertent biting or exposure to the piercing can result in damage to the teeth.

Fractures to teeth can be classified as to the degree of damage.  Damage to the tooth that only involves the enamel of the tooth is a Class I injury.  This is a minor injury that can be repaired by a dentist.   A Class II injury involves both the enamel and part of the dentin of the tooth.   Injuries that involve the dentin often cause sensitivity to heat, cold and air.  A persons with a Class II injury need to be referred to a dentist for further treatment within 24 hours of the injury. Injuries to the tooth that include the enamel, dentin and pulp is classified as a Class III injury.  These types of injuries require immediate referral to a dentist for treatment.  Immediate treatment is required to prevent infections.  A persons with fractures of their teeth may also complain of pain to the area that is sore with touching, headache and/or nausea or vomiting.  If the injury was related to a traumatic injury, the  person should also be evaluated for any symptoms of a head injury.

Traumatic accidents may also result in loose or dislodged teeth.  This type of injury is most common in children between the ages of 7-10.  Peoples who have sustained an injury that results in loose or dislodged teeth may complain of pain at the affected area, bleeding at the affected area and other signs consistent with head injuries. Teeth that are minimally loose (which can be felt be gently applying pressure to the tooth) will normally heal within 2 weeks. If the tooth is significantly loose, the tooth may need to be stabilized. A person should always seek immediate treatment from a qualified dentist. When a tooth is completely dislodged, this becomes an emergency.  Teeth usually need to be reimplanted within 30 minutes to ensure successful therapy.  Again, a complete dislodging of a tooth is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.
