Temporomandibular Joint
Syndrome
The temporomandibular
joint is located on either side of your head, below your ears. TMJ is
pain and swelling in this joint. The most common causes for TMJ are
swelling, displacement of the joint due to trauma (falling onto the
jaw area, taking a direct blow to the jaw, striking the jaw on a
windshield), and/or misalignment (“bite”) between the lower and
upper jaw. TMJ can affect both males and females but is most
frequently noted in women between the ages of 20-30.
Approximately 10-20 million adults suffer from TMJ
dysfunction. TMJ can be
worsened by grinding or clenching your teeth, (often done during
sleep and related to stress) poorly aligned teeth, poorly fitting
dentures and arthritis.
Patients
who suffer from TMJ complain of pain with chewing, talking or
yawning. Patients describe pain in the TMJ region that is dull in
nature, often radiating to the temples or the back of the head. An
inability to open the mouth completely with a limited range of motion
for the lower jaw or hearing “popping” and/or “cracking”
sounds have also been reported by patients with TMJ.
Patients
may be required to use medications, ice, heat and massage to assist
with the symptoms and treatment of TMJ. A dentist may be able to fit
patients with TMJ with a night-guard prosthesis to prevent grinding
of teeth during sleep and further aggravation of the symptoms.
Correction of poorly aligned teeth, jaw may also be required.
Very rarely, patients who do not respond to conservation treatment
for TMJ dysfunction may be required to undergo surgical intervention.
Patients who do not undergo any treatment for TMJ may develop further
erosion of the bone in the joint with continued pain and symptoms. Depression
and chronic pain may
develop as complications of TMJ.
